With all the bad quality food products, people these days are in difficult struggles with their oral health. One of the most common issues is tooth sensitivity. This condition can occur because of several reasons, and luckily it is easily treated at the dental clinic.

However, even though it’s easy to fix, tooth sensitivity can evolve into more serious issues, therefore requiring more expensive and complicated interventions.

What are Some Good Remedies for Sensitive Teeth?

To avoid this condition or to stop its further development, here are some good and scientifically proven remedies that can be used at home:

Causes & Symptoms

As we mentioned there are several causes for tooth sensitivity (also known as dentin hypersensitivity), including alcohol and tobacco usage, improper brushing, consumption of acidic foods and beverages, teeth grinding, tooth decay, and lack of hygiene.

To find out the exact reason for your condition, opt for consultations at the dental clinic. In the meantime, here are some signs you should look out for:

  • Pain while eating or drinking
  • Swollen or receding gums
  • Sensitivity to cold air
  • Sensitivity to temperature variations ( For example when drinking hot tea or when eating ice cream)

Ancient India & Oils

One of the best remedies for tooth sensitivity are essential oils. Used even in ancient India, these oils can have a significant positive impact on our oral health. They are widely known for their healing abilities, clearing the way from dirt and bacteria, relieving all kinds of teeth ache.

This cleaning technique is also known as oil pulling. Various types of oils can be used, but the most renowned are those from coconut, sunflower, sesame, and clove. A popular method is to mix a teaspoon of coconut with 6 drops of clove oil. Use this mixture to rinse your teeth after brushing.

Oil pulling can be done daily since it doesn’t involve any harmful acidic substances. Remember not to neglect regular brushing since both are important for your oral hygiene.

Onions & Garlic

In the realm of vegetables and fruits, some are tastier and sweeter than others. However, what the latter lack in taste, they have in antioxidants and various health benefits. Even though unpleasant to swallow, onions and garlic are undoubtedly the healthiest vegetables out there.

Tooth sensitivity or decay occurs when a significant amount of bacteria has started to nest around your gums and teeth. By chewing pieces of onion and garlic, any type of bacteria will have much thinner chances of building up inside your mouth.

Apart from chewing, you can also create a garlic/onion remedy. With mixing the slices with a couple of water drops and a little salt, you will create the perfect antibiotic. Apply the mixture for 5-10 minutes on the damaged tooth and wait for the magic to happen.

Saltwater

Most remedies are inspired by ancient wisdom and techniques. Surprisingly, these have been very effective in relieving pain and destroying harmful bacteria. Of course, toothpaste and regular appointments with your dentist are more important and the key for good oral health.

If you are looking for another kinky ancient recipe, start to consider rinsing with salt water. Recent research showed how these kinds of rinses reduce dental plaque in the same quantities as those done with chlorhexidine mouthwash.

To fight off tooth sensitivity with saltwater, mix half a teaspoon of salt with 8 ounces of warm water. Rinse your mouth and remember to spit the mixture out every time.

Fluoride

Most professional oral hygienists will recommend using fluoride at every chance you can get. This means purchasing fluoride mouthwash, toothpaste, and gel. This substance has helped in treating tooth sensitivity and in relieving pain as a side effect.

Tooth sensitivity happens when enamel (a tooth’s protective layer) wears off. Without this layer, our dentins are exposed, making our teeth more sensitive to outside conditions. Fluoride can participate in the reconstruction of our enamel layers since it strengthens them.

Besides using the right mouthwash, you should also look at your toothbrush and floss. To avoid conditions such as dentin hypersensitivity, it is crucial to brush your teeth the right way. Enamel layers are also destroyed by insensitive and angry brushing.

So use a soft toothbrush to brush your teeth as gently as you can. This way they will have fewer chances of becoming hypersensitive or damaged.
